I copped out today and took the pickup truck to the motor cycle luncheon... I had ordered a hat before we left for the Arizona adventure, and it was in and would be available at the leader's table...
I went for breakfast at about 9:30, as I surmised that everyone would be there way early because the forecast was for 100 degrees by noon... And it didn't let us down, because it was 100 by about 11:30 when I was back here in KC.
The luncheon was at the Missouri town of Lone Jack, which was one of the oldest towns in Missouri.. Most of the history written about the town centers around a civil war battle where the confederates ousted the union. They fought in the town square.... The union soldiers were outnumbered by more than two to one...
But of course today we met at the Lone Jack cafe and had a very nice meal... And I took some mild ribbing about coming with the truck, but with my handicap that remains after the surgery, hot and sweaty isn't much of an option, so they will just have to get over it....
Back in KC I took back the fan switch that didn't have the right number of wires, and the lady at Home Depot credited my account without much question... She wasn't even interested in whether or not I had found the right one.... Big city folks really could care less about their fellow citizens....
And since it was 102 when I pulled into the driveway, I spent the rest of the day working on recovering all those pictures that went down the tubes with the lost hard drive... It required firing up the really old computer from 2006, in which I had replaced the hard drive after it quit. Most of the pictures before 2010 were safely stored on it... But the machine has a power supply problem and I had to hold it just so in order to keep it running.... I loaded the pics off on a thumb drive...
It took several passes with this drive as it was only 4 gig, and I had about 20 gig of files... Then I sorted out all of the stored picture cards and matched them against the restored files, sourcing additional photos... And last, I copied all the files from the desktop that I built in 2010 that runs Linux... It had most of the newer photos on it...
This took hours, since my organization was lacking even before the crash.... Perhaps it would be a good time to go get one of those terra bite back ups..... But will I actually go do it? There was something like 8000 files under my pictures when I got done.....
I do think I will copy all the files back over on the Linux desk top from the lap top as that would be a good backup for now....
I could break down and purchase carbonite or one of the commercial off site places, but I tend to not want to spend ongoing money on stuff like that....
And I am sure that I could put a bunch of it on Picasa, but that means that google would have even more of me and my info........... uh,,,,,,, do I really want to do that?

I feel the same way about Picasa that I do about all the other Google applications.
ReplyDeleteGypsy, Picasa is a wonderful photo editor, as long as you store your stuff on your own computer.... But storing everything on Google's Picasa online photo albums gives them all of your pictures...... I really don't trust them with more than the stuff I make available on the blog......
DeleteKeeping track of photos is always an issue it seems. I bought a 1TB external drive a few years ago and that has solved my problems for now. I have 4 years worth of photos stored on it in simple directories labelled by Year then Month. Each month, if I remember, I copy my pics over to the external drive.
ReplyDeleteI feel the same way about Picasa that I do about all other Google applications too - I love them! If I really hated Google apps, I'd probably quit Blogger (owned by Google) and switch to WordPress or some other blogging format.
I'll happily use their (free) applications, in exchange for what information they have up to this point. Handing over all my pictures, good, bad or otherwise? Nope. I'd sooner go out and drop the coin on a stand alone hard drive, which is just what I did not that long ago.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, Picasa is a great photo editor. I figure, anything that I can get to work without pulling out the rest of my hair has to be good.
