More of San Diego..

Here comes a Navy Destroyer... DDG 88 USS Preble...  Its stationed here in San Diego...

We were out on Shelter Island at the shore line park..   And this ship returned from maneuvers..

Its interesting that the police boat is accompanying it in the small picture above..

After setting for a while at the park we decided to take a drive out to the Cabrillo National Monument...  Its at the very peak of the highest point on Point Loma...  The view up there is like you were flying and airplane..

You know the part of Coronado Island that you can't drive to because its Navy Base?  Well you can see it from up on the top of Point Loma...  Its all air field...
And the Submarine Base is quite visible too.. Although they dock the subs on the other side of that big floating dry dock..

We stopped along the shoreline of Harbor Island where the Hilton is located and caught a shot of the Downtown Skyline as the sun was setting over the Point Loma hill....

This almost seems like a postcard......

This is called Unconditional Surrender... A sculpture of Seward Johnson..  It is based on a photograph of Albert Eisenstaedt of V-J Day that was published in Life magazine in 1945...

San Diego had the first statue on loan since 2007 but it was styrofoam based and needed repair...  So it was removed in 2012...

And thanks to a fund set up to purchase a bronze replacement by the USS Midway Museum pictured in the background, and several of their well to do donors, the statue was returned now in bronze and is permanently owned by the harbor...

This is highly controversial here in San Diego and is seen as cheap and sexist by some of the younger set that are not aware of its significance to the end of World War II...

Unconditional Surrender Wiki....  explains the controversy....

This was just erected in the last two weeks and is causing folks to come look at it in large numbers...  I think February 15, 2013 was the date it was done..

Other works by Seward include the statue of Marilyn Monroe that is in Palm Springs...  My friend Rick Blogged about that one Here!

I have tons of more pictures but that is enough for today....!

  2. I guess I don't really understand what all the to-do is about. I think it looks really great there in front of the ship. Maybe it's a little large and not real accurate but then I'm old enough to remember what it signifies.

  3. There are several similar statues on Central Ave in Phoenix, all life size. One of a window washer, one of a guy relaxing on a lawn chair, and a businessman reading a paper. I think there is one on the sidewalk in Wickenburg, too.

  5. Thanks for sharing all the great photos, Rod. I visited the Cabrillo Monument last year and the view from there of San Diego is absolutely stunning. Your photo of the buildings with the sun reflecting off the glass is a beauty.

As for the statue, I like it and have no idea why anyone would find it objectionable.
