Sault Ste Marie

The lock gates are still open and I thought I saw a tour boat go in there....

After climbing about 5 flights of stairs I'm in the observation building looking thru the windows and there is that tour boat down along the lock wall...

I think he is rising up out of the lock...

Maybe if I get a little closer..

Yep, his roof is above the concrete wall now....

Boy he's really climbing now...

Lock is almost full...

The front gates are beginning to open..

The lines that tied him to the wall are removed....

And off he goes into the Superior side of the river.....  I think I read that the rise is 21 feet...  But that is only a memory, not verified...

Again our move today only took about an hour and a half...  Of course getting ready to travel and then setting back up once we arrived add a couple of more hours...

We are at the Aune Osbourn campground which is a city park along the St Marys river below the locks...  Ships pass directly by the front of this campground...  In a comment reader Flower Girl suggested this as the correct place to make a reservation, so we did that yesterday morning....

The place is rather full, so I was glad to know for sure that we could get in...  I went in the office and paid the rest of the money, and the gal gave me the map and said your on 44.....  That was it!  No drawing of a route to drive or explanation of any kind...  It turned out to be around a corner but then almost right in front of the office....  All sites are 30 amp and water...  $27...  I think the ones that look directly to the river channel are more...

Sewer is behind the park, and costs $2...  So when you go dump, you go pay...

Maybe we can look into taking a ride on that tour boat in the morning....

First it rains, and then the sun comes back out.... But tonight when the sun was low in the West after a session of rain we were treated to this...

  1. For the campground, the sewer dump is free. You just go there dump and be on your way. Have fun!

  2. I've always wanted to visit "The Soo" so it was great to see your pics of the locks this morning. I'm assuming your border crossing was o.k. as first, you made it; and, second you never mentioned any problems.

Hope you get to take that boat tour today!

    1. Rick, the South side of the river is in the US.. We d id not cross into CA and go to the KOA camp up there.. That is why we are in the city park here in Sault Ste Marie. Crossing the bridge into CA seems like it is no problem, but coming back to the US has a line that stretches all the way across the bridge which is a couple of miles long... So unless we want to wait 2 hours or more to get back going into CA seems like it won't happen...

  3. I was hoping to get a report, and maybe pictures of crossing the bridge. I hear that some drivers freak out and have to be rescued.

    1. Phil, its really high up there, and going into Canada seems to be no problem.... But coming back the other way is a big problem as the border agents cannot handle the traffic... Stories of waits up to 5 hours abound.. Our tour boat captain said they always buy a new movie and take it along to watch while they sit for hours on the high bridge... Also they only go when the backup on the bridge is only about half way back into CA...

  4. Nice pictures of the lock. I hope to be coming through there in August, although now you have me worried about the border crossing.
