Shipshewana, Indiana

We are in the land of the Amish and their horses and buggies....  Shipshewana is a small community where the Amish seem to have many stores that take advantage of their craft abilities which are sold to the rest of the outside world...

Loyce and I decided to stay off of the interstate today, as we didn't want to go anywhere near Chicago or its suburbs...  May as well stay in Kansas City if we did that...  At least we know our way around there..

So as we headed out of Rantoul, we got back on our old familiar highway US 24 that we took all the way across Missouri...  Illinois and Indiana is now a flowing sea of green corn..  Shoulder or head tall with tassels appearing..  Some fields are shorter and some are totally mature...

That is mostly all we have seen this last two days are corn fields....  Once we were over South of South Bend, we headed North on US 31...  This brought us to Old US 20 where we headed East...

We went down to Goshen, to see where the County Fair grounds are that will be the site of the Escapade next year...  And with some creative driving, we found the place...  But they were getting set up for the start of their fair on Friday....  People have reservations that in some cases were 5 years old....   So they don't do public camping this time of year...

The lady gave us a campground sheet of the area that was printed by the RV Museum in Elkart...   And since we were a ways East anyway I came up here to Shipshewana...  We drove thru town, using the gps to guide us thru the countryside....

We passed many Amish Farms... as you can always tell from the lack of electrical wires going into their lanes...  Usually a few horses are in view, and buggies are parked along the outside walls of the barns....

Folks were out raking hay with horse drawn rotary rakes...  Amazing how well they actually work... Town was a hustle bustle of activities, as tourists were everywhere...  Buggies were present in every parking lot as well..

We are camped at the Shipshewana Campground South which has 150 or more sites...  It was quite hot when we arrived and all I did was put the level legs down and the slides out...

I finally went outside and hooked up the electricity so I could turn off the generator...  It was later in the evening before we hooked up the rest of the utilities...

Sandie askes if I can work on some pictures, and I can but I had an accident, where my cell phone went swimming in the washing machine...  This did in the camera feature of my phone...  Which could not be revived by the repair shop last week...

So pictures will have to be with my actual camera, of which I have three...  But then they can't be posted with this tablet that I have been using since we left home...  But I did bring the laptop  somewhere in here....  Humm, Amish folks don't like their picture taken.... Stealth maybe....

  2. One of my favorite areas. We went to the bank and loved the fact that there were about 10 buggies with horses tied up outside. Gee - Jim let his phone go swimming once upon a time also. Amazing how they just get so relaxed they don't want to work anymore. Sounds like it's going to be hot, hot, hot for you so be safe.

  3. We've never been to Amish country but sure would like to see it one day. Glad to see you and Loyce are enjoying your RV holiday.

BTW...I have changed my G+ Profile/Blogger to enable the 'Reply-To' feature that I talked about in my blog this morning. So, now, you should just be able to click on 'Repy' in your email and send me a not. Could you please test this for me by simply responding 'test' or whatever? Thanks.

  4. Did you notice the Amish GPS feature? It's all the horse droppings along the side of the road, they just follow them home... ;c)
