Mackinaw City

When you walk up to the little park where the Macinaw Light house is located, you get a sense of the changing of times...  The light was built in 1890 and the bridge that made the light unnecessary can be seen behind it..

The reader board about the lighthouse...  Click on it and it will be big enough to read....

From the front you can see the living quarters and its big front porch...  Today it is a museum, and if you look closely the light itself is full of tourists, snapping oodles of pictures...

Now how about the bridge started in 1951 and finished in 1957..  It was the worlds largest suspension bridge back in its day, but now it has been relegated to third largest...

They had 75 mph winds here last week, and a semi was blown off of its wheels and over against the vertical wires that stretch up to the main cable..  This kept the truck from going over the side..... But he was leaning way over past 45 degrees... bet he was thinking he was about to die...  News Story

And lastly today we drove over to the Cheboygan area in Michigan this afternoon to find a really nice quiet little town with a nice main street....  And a quilt shop for Loyce....

But the only picture I took was of this Coast Guard vessel as they were lifting some sort of blocks of concrete aboard...  My guess was that they were weights to go on the bottom of the lake to anchor marking buoys..   Not overly exciting.

We  did park out on the city beach park along the lake shore and eat our lunch. this afternoon...  Kids were playing in the water along the beach which was quite shallow...  A big black lab dog was running along in the water quite far from shore chasing a kid...  It looked surreal, but they were both in water only a foot deep or so...

We started the day back in Petoskey at the KOA in not much of a hurry as check out time was at 11:00..  But before long we had to get a move on to get packed up..  We left at exactly 11...  Loyce was in the office returning the gate pass card as I was sitting in the driveway beyond this gate...

We drove about as slow as we could manage without holding up traffic too much...  and still arrived at this Macinaw City KOA before noon... Their official checkin time...

The lady at the desk said it wasn't a problem as our site hadn't been rented the day before...   We were given an end of the row site which had more grass than some of the others, but we still had to put down our mat to keep the dirt out of the MH..  We hope it doesn't rain, but it is scheduled for the day that we leave...

And finally we have been members of RV Park Reviews.com since we got the 2007  Jayco TT..  And usually I have been reassured by their reviews, using them to plan a lot of our travels...

But on this trip, they led us to the County Fair Grounds in Goshen, Indiana which turned out to never take people from the street, as the lady described...  Everyone that stays there, does so for an activity at the fair grounds....  So we drove quite a ways out of our way on that one..

And the shared picnic table park was listed as a nice quiet park where the owner went out of his way to be helpful...  And had a rating of 9....   Had I read the review a little closer, they mentioned that the bath house was out of order...

So I'm a tad underwhelmed by some of the reviews...  Also the Petoskey KOA is one of the nicest camping places we have ever been too, and someone was on RV Park Reviews ranting about the perceived shortcomings of his stay...  I never know what to believe...

Perhaps just playing it by ear seems to work out in the end...  So we will drive up to the Canada border and see what happens next.. Its almost cold at night here so the AC isn't in play anymore...

  1. We stayed at the fairgrounds in Goshen a few years ago. Wonder when they changed their policy? RV Parks review is a great tool but what makes a great park for a lot of folks doesn't mean much to me - pools, and amenities like that. I could care less about them. So it is rather hit or miss.

  2. You win some, you lose some I guess--we've had the same type experiences. The park we stayed in while working in Texas this past winter gets rave reviews for that area but Mike and I would never stay there again--way too crowded for us. Sorry if I stepped on toes!

  3. Yeah, I use the RV Parks review all the time, but sometimes the different reviews are a bit contradictory. I tend not to pay too much attention to opinions based on long-term residents or amenities, or someone in the office not being nice. But if they say they had a lot of trouble getting in or out for one reason or another, or that there are a lot of low branches or something like that, then we will probably give that one a pass.

  4. That is the Coast Guard Cutter Mackinaw, a 240 foot Icebreaker that also does double duty as being able to service navigational buoys. You are correct, those concrete blocks, called "Sinker" are the weights that hold buoys in place. Some weigh up to 20,000 pounds.

I was at her launching in Marinette, Wisconsin. She was launched sideways into the water because the shipyard where she was built is on a river and is to narrow to launch ships stern first. It was quite a sight to see.

  5. That is one beautiful looking lighthouse, Rod. Thanks for posting the beautiful photos.

The bridge is a pretty spectacular sight as well.
