Looking at Brenda's and then JB's comments from yesterday, describes my experience at the furniture store to the exact degree!! Brenda is all excited by the possibilities that each of the furniture pieces seem to provide for her living experience within her home......... She wants to go shopping with Loyce...
And John see's nothing but all those big four figure price tags hanging from everything, knowing that he can't get out of there unless its a several thousand dollar experience...... Get er done before we get back he begs....
You could drop the price of a good car in there in a matter of minutes..... And furniture has absolutely no resale value at all.... Pay $500 for a table and its worth about 50 bucks if you sell it used..... Absolutely no one wants a used piece at anywhere near what you paid for it........
So with furniture we are buying 1200 miles away from anywhere else we can use it, I know it isn't a good purchase..... But Loyce sees all the possibilities to make this new home really special... To heck with what residual value will be..... What does that mean?
So I just sat there in the furniture store and let her pick out stuff, trying to keep the over all price within somewhat of a do able amount.... But even a new bed is well over a grand......... And that's a fairly cheap one... Not counting the headboard..... I am that far out of touch with this stuff....
So after the soaking of my credit cards yesterday, I kind of sat today out for most of the afternoon. She went off purchasing groceries and supplies at the local Wal Marts and such. It was over 108 outside again this afternoon, so a shopping trip didn't compute for me...
But I had all this serenity disrupted this afternoon because we had to go shopping for a new refrigerator and a washer and dryer........ I've been dreading this one too.....
But I did know that the local Home Depot was having a sale on these appliances for the fourth of July, and it seemed to be a good sale. So I drove right to the local store about 1 mile East of us here in the park.. I know where all of these places are around here because we have wintered here for the last 5 years......
As far as the washer dryer, we picked out the exact set that we have back in KC.. Front loading GE models that have served us nicely since we moved from Iowa.... They were on sale at $200 bucks off for each piece..... Wow, that's better than I thought we would be doing... And then we found the matching side by side fridge in black like the rest of the new appliances... It was also $200 off...
Well OK then let's write this up... Of course the dryer kits and electric cord and stuff is extra, and we have the big sales tax here in Arizona..... But delivery was free!!! But then that's were Loyce's heart was broken, because it will take a week from Monday before they will be able to be out with the stuff.
Seems that since they are having this big sale, deliveries are way behind...... So we may have to live out of the Ice chest in the new house and wash our clothes back here at the trailer park too.... Not Happy!
But then the salesman pulled another rabbit out of his hat, saying that he could get another $100 dollars off of the whole deal at the register... And he had to talk to customer service folks about financing versus cash, and perhaps this last discount was for paying up front... I just kept my mouth shut and waited to see what the outcome would be.......
We came away with $ 700 in savings from the normal store tags, so this trip didn't bother me so much.. And these items have a better resale value too, not that we will sell them anytime soon....
We left the store about 7 PM and it was still 106 out in the parking lot with the sun mostly down... Ah, Arizona!!!

Glad to see you got a black fridge instead of the stainless steel that everyone seems to think is wonderful. All I can think of is that people love cleaning fingerprints off their appliances! You'll be all set up in no time. Looking forward to all the photos of the lovely furniture you've purchased.
ReplyDeleteSounds like you got the same sale deal on GE appliances at Home Depot that we did. We bought a GE dishwasher and got $200 off with free delivery and thought that was pretty good.
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean about furniture and stuff and I can only imagine what it must cost to setup a home from scratch.
Hmmm. Having someone else to deliver it might get it to you sooner if you find a delivery service or someone like "meathead Movers" to fetch it. Or maybe a service technician. With all the colleges around there, surely there are young people looking for one-time jobs.
